Grant Writing & Winning

Now that I am writing grants eight hours a day for five days a week, my freelance writing time has dropped, as I do not wish to spend every waking hour in front of a computer. I have not abandoned it completely, though, as I love extra spending money and new shoes.

I have written three winning grants since starting this job in July, with many more sitting on board and foundation's tables as I type.

Three won:

BBVA Compass: $10,000
3M: $8,000
City of Austin: $32,000

Amazon has a first novel competition I'd like to enter. Now if I can only juggle grant writing, freelance writing, and writing for fun. Guess which one of these I typically abandon once I start to reach my brain's quota of screen time? I need to prioritize myself.

Record Store Day: my first photo + writing assignment

I realized I forgot to post this from last spring. One of my first writing/photo assignments for Venus was to cover Record Store Day in Austin. Here it is.

Austin City Limits 2010 Photographs

I put on my photographer hat for the Austin City Limits music festival this year. Literally, I put on a hat because my nose got sunburned by the end of day 1. I didn't make the same mistake for days 2 & 3.

Theo Alexander Interview in Venus print issue

This is my first print article for Venus. It's sort of just a blurb - but I still got to interview Theo Alexander. I prepped for this article by watching all the seasons of True Blood, and I have to admit I'm a bit addicted now. I have way more thoughts on the show that wouldn't fit in the format of the article, so maybe I'll write those down for my blog.

I'd like to foot note this article by saying that a few phrases in the article, like "the buzz" and "biz" were included by my editor despite my whining to not use them, but so it goes.

It's too bad Theo's character was killed off a week before this was released on news stands! Oh, spoiler.

Eat Pray Love movie review

I was so excited to see this movie when I heard it was coming out (I loved the book). Imagine my excitement when I found out I would get to see the film at a press screening.

I had some mixed thoughts but liked it over all. Also, this is my first movie review, EVER. Hopefully I'll get to do more.
